From a garage to
state-of-the-art medical facility
An orthopedic physicians group needed to extend their ambulatory surgical center to include a center for post-operative physical therapy. The perfect location next door to their Geneva facility became available. However, it was a bus service garage.
For this adaptive reuse challenge, we maintained the original box-like structure, but added a drum — a curved glass wall that houses the center’s physical therapy room. The drum’s visibility from the county’s busiest road, especially at night when the structure’s inset lights spark curiosity, has become part of the practice’s branding. A dramatic skylight, adds to the industrial chic effect. We incorporated the same roof materials and brick colors as the surgical center across the way to create a campus feel.
The center’s interior features a modular pod concept with six clusters for each physician to have their own exam rooms, yet conveniently share diagnostic equipment and access to the physical therapy department.
