For commercial structures, I try to look for ways the architecture helps brand the building and brand the services. For me this was probably the most successful example of that.

From a garage to
state-of-the-art medical facility

An orthopedic physicians group needed to extend their ambulatory surgical center to include a center for post-operative physical therapy. The perfect location next door to their Geneva facility became available. However, it was a bus service garage.

The drum’s visibility from the county’s busiest road, especially at night when the structure’s inset lights spark curiosity, has become part of the practice’s branding.

For this adaptive reuse challenge, we maintained the original box-like structure, but added a drum — a curved glass wall that houses the center’s physical therapy room. The drum’s visibility from the county’s busiest road, especially at night when the structure’s inset lights spark curiosity, has become part of the practice’s branding.  A dramatic skylight, adds to the industrial chic effect. We incorporated the same roof materials and brick colors as the surgical center across the way to create a campus feel.

The center’s interior features a modular pod concept with six clusters for each physician to have their own exam rooms, yet conveniently share diagnostic equipment and access to the physical therapy department.

As our country matures and space becomes more of the ability to find new uses for buildings becomes more and more valuable. Designs like Fox Valley Orthopedics that creatively reuse existing structures, as well as appeal to the new hospitality model of health care delivery, will set the standard.

We never imagined that our building could undergo such a dramatic and complete transformation. The interiors are stunning and the exterior exceeds our wildest dreams. We couldn’t be more pleased with how this building meets our needs and creates a professional image to all the traffic that passes along Randall Road.
